Who We Are

If you’re struggling with emotional difficulties like anxiety or low mood and think you need support, you can seek help from our registered counsellor. The Counselling Unit at IUMW is a free confidential service available to foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University. Counsellors are trained in human behaviour and understand the importance of confidentiality.

What is Counselling?

Counselling is the skilled and principled use of relationships to facilitate self- knowledge, emotional acceptance and growth, and the optimal development of personal resources. The aim is to provide an opportunity to work towards living more satisfyingly and resourcefully. Counselling relationships will vary according to need but may be concerned with developmental issues, addressing and resolving specific problems, making decisions, coping with crises, developing personal insights and knowledge, working through feelings of inner conflict, or improving relationships with others.

  • Self-harm / Suicidal thoughts
  • Loneliness and isolation
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationship issues (family, friends, couple, classmate, social interaction) 
  • Depression, Anxiety, Stress screening, and consultation 
  • Referral for psychological assessment/psychiatry services

Confidentiality

According to the Malaysia Counsellors Act 1998 (Act 580), all materials and information discussed during the counselling sessions are strictly confidential, except when there is imminent danger of harm to the client or another person.

Special Needs Support

If your studies are being affected by a long-term illness, temporary injury, physical or learning disabilities, or a mental health condition, you may wish to declare this with the Counselling Unit. We’re here to support you and help you to achieve your full academic potential. Any disability disclosure will be handled with confidentiality and sensitivity.

  • If you are currently struggling with a mental health crisis (e.g. intense suicidal ideation and/or attempt), head directly to your nearest government hospital emergency department, or call 999 – in that case, an ambulance will be dispatched to your location and you will be sent to the relevant emergency department.

Peer Helpers Group

IUMW Peer Helpers are students who have been selected and trained to support the work of the Counselling Unit. We aim to provide a positive, encouraging community that supports the academic and personal development of students in IUMW.

Our main services:
  • Assisting new students to adapt to university life
  • Provide a listening ear and emotional support to fellow students in times of need.
  • Organise various events on mental health awareness
