Q&A With Assoc. Prof. Dr Nurul Nisa Omar

Assoc. Prof. Dr Nisa is the Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science. She specialises in New Media & Communication, Multimedia Art Design & Branding, Educational Media & Learning Technologies, and Media Planning & PR.

What’s your teaching style?
A mixture of hybrid / blended teaching and facilitator style. Nevertheless, regardless style, I choose to teach with excitement and passion in hope that my students are not only learning but living the lesson.

What does a ‘good education’ mean to you?
A good education is about understanding that there is more to learning than chasing your grades, going through the modules, and working on your assignments. Education is about learning something deeper than any assignment rubrics can assess. You have to take the experience and the skills that you gain, and use it after you graduate.

Name your favourite music artist and favourite movie?
I am an all-time big fan of Michael Jackson, however, currently, the song inside my head is Lover by Taylor Swift. I love movies, and it is tough to pick only one as my favourite. The top pick I can think of right now would be Avatar or Pride & Prejudice.

What do you think is one skill that every successful person has?
One is not enough. But to be successful, you need to keep this in mind, “Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do!”

Name someone who inspires you and why?
Easy question, my mother. Because no one else could compete.

How do you overcome difficult situations or challenges?
Always look at the situation from different perspectives. I never shy away from challenges and I am competitive in nature. I always want to win and that is how I am determined to overcome whatever difficult situation – almost like I will ask myself “who is going to win? This problem that I am facing, or me?” Of course, I want to win then everything else seems easier to manage afterwards. If I end up failing, I just think “you know what, in 50 years I will be 6feet under the ground anyway”.. Then life goes on 🙂

How do you motivate students to keep learning?
I will always push them to do their best. They might think I have a high expectation but in truth, I feel like most of the time they don’t see their full potential. I don’t expect them to get an A in fact, I wouldn’t want them to only care about their grades. I want them to care about doing the best regardless of the outcome. I want them to be proud of what they produced – for as long as they leave my lesson learning something useful, I am already proud and happy.

Name one thing you do/item you use daily that contributes to a successful day.
Easy question – my iPad.

Final words of advice for the students of IUMW?
Final advice – Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do! Final words – I love each and every one of you.
