This short course is the first in a series that will provide aspiring bio-entrepreneurs and those interested in this sector, with the essentials for understanding what it takes to start a life science business.
Globally the biotechnology industry is worth upwards of USD500 billion a year since 2020 with demand for solutions from biotechnology increasing exponentially in all sectors.
Malaysia has just launched its National Biotechnology Policy 2 designed to revitalise the country’s bio-economy development. The Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) is driving Malaysia’s bio-economy agenda, which aims to enable Malaysian bio-businesses to become global. The strategies include a focus on agricultural productivity and food security, healthcare discoveries, and the adoption of sustainable industrial practices. The new policy will create opportunities for new life science businesses and entrepreneurial activity across the sectors.

Trainers
Dr Rahim’s research interests revolve around the area of genetics and proteomics (Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), gene cloning, protein expression, directed evolution, DNA and protein sequence analysis, and genetic and protein engineering. He is also experienced in bioinformatics analysis (multiple sequence alignment, protein prediction and docking).
Dr Ismail Nizam is a professional trainer and management consultant covering both local and international markets. He has more than 12 years of training and consultancy experience. His expertise lies in developing continuing intellectual and educational programs for adult learning and was seen as a renowned change agent among his clientele.
Dr Ong’s research interests primarily focus on Enzyme Technology, Fermentation Technology, and Applied Microbiology. Since his PhD, he has been working on the potential application of immobilised tannase enzyme in elevating the antioxidative potential of green tea extract. He is an HRD Corp certified trainer who consistently encourages creative thinking to help learners develop their competencies.
Mr Shahril Rozali specialises in the agribiotech field including plant tissue culture, postharvest technology, secondary metabolites, and urban farming. His current research revolves around harnessing plant tissue culture techniques to enhance the production of valuable secondary metabolites, with the aim of developing potential pharmaceutical products sourced from locally underutilized medicinal plants. Furthermore, he is dedicated to advancing post-harvest technology within the realm of urban farming, focusing on the creation of sustainable and nutritious food products. His notable achievements include the Gold award in the International Harmonious Entrepreneurship Society Graduate Enterprise Competition 2022, and International Summit of Innovation and Design Exposition 2020, and also Silver award in the Malaysia Invention and Innovation Expo 2022. These achievements underscore Mr. Shahril’s outstanding contributions and recognition in his field of expertise.
Dr Yasmin is an Adjunct Professor at IUMW and an Honorary Professor at the Institute of Advanced Studies, Universiti Malaya. She is also a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and the Institute of Corporate Directors Malaysia.
Assoc. Prof. Dr Sharmila is a certified trainer by the Institute of Training and Development and has recently been certified internationally in the Train the Trainer programme, mentored by renowned expert Dr Mario. She has developed modules and conducted programmes in Executive Leadership and Management, and Business Communication for both Corporate and Public programmes.
Prof. Dr Norzulaani Khalid is currently an Adjunct Professor at IUMW. She retired from Universiti Malaya (UM) after 35 years in service. As a professor at UM, her contributions surpassed academic norms where her research output was not only visible to her peers through publications but also had an impact on society through community and industry engagements. Prof. Dr Norzulaani is the founder of a UM spin-off company, Granatech Sdn. Bhd. based on plant cloning technology developed from her research. Her team successfully established a commercial plant tissue culture laboratory at Rembau Community College which provided jobs for the students and income opportunities for the college. She believes in promoting research and teaching for the social usefulness of knowledge that responds beyond economic development. Her team collaborated with AADK (Agensi Anti Dadah Kebangsaan), helping drug addicts in rehabilitation and PERKIM (Pertubuhan Kebajikan Islam Malaysia) farmers to develop skills in handling tissue culture-derived planting materials. She has worked with companies such as Kelantan Biotech Sdn Bhd, Kim Agri Sdn Bhd and others to provide solutions related to plant cloning technology.
Ching Shya is a Dual PhD holder in Chemical Engineering, graduating from Universiti Malaya (UM), and École Nationale Supérieure des Ingénieurs en Arts Chimiques et Technologiques (ENSIACET), Toulouse, France. She joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at Universiti Malaya in 2009 as a researcher. Her research focuses on renewable energy, biomass and electrochemistry. She is a Registered Chemist (ChM) with the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (IKM) and a Committee Member for the Division of Green & Sustainable Chemistry (DSSC), IKM.
Prior to joining Malaysian Bioeconomy Development Corporation Sdn Bhd, Norazamiah held various roles specialising in corporate tax at Ernst & Young Tax Consultants Sdn Bhd, Hewlett-Packard Sdn Bhd and Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd (Proton). She graduated in Accounting & Finance from Dublin Business School in Ireland and she began her career as a junior auditor at a mid-sized accounting firm in Dublin. Norazamiah currently leads the Business Advisory Department, which offers advisory and facilitation services in areas such as tax, intellectual property, regulatory compliance and immigration.
